The
school is located just on the edge of Iten town, which is
45 mins from Eldoret. Iten is a small but busy town and
is home to the council offices for the region, it is on
the edge of the Elgeyo Escarpment, a 7000ft drop!. There
are stunning views across the Kerio Valley and the trip
down the escarpment is always one to remember.
Your
help is required in many ways so there is lots to do! To
start with you will need to learn the basics of sign language
both the teachers and children will help you with this.
It is not difficult and you will pick it up quickly plus
it is fun to learn and you will interact and get to know
the children really well, with lots of laughs along the
way.
Below
are outlined some of the activities you might help with:
* Fund
Generating Project - Assisting a project that will raise
funds for the school such as a tree nursery which will also
improve the environment.
* Organise and help with after class activities
* Create visual learning aids
* Teach about the wider world & western culture
* Assist to teach English etc
* Improve and brighten up the facilities
* Coach Sports
It is
hard to explain how rewarding it is to work with these children
and be part of their lives even for a short time, seeing
them smile and laugh at the world when the odds are stacked
against them!
A Typical
Day - The
school day starts at 8am with a break for lunch and finishes
at 5pm. You will organise with the teachers what classes
you will assist, so in the morning you may help Class 2
then in the afternoon you might assist in another area.
As the kids board they have lots of time after school, you
can organise kick-abouts, games, colouring & drawing, hair
& nail care as the girls never have the opportunity to do
girly things.
