Gap Year Reviews

Company: Changing Worlds
Job:
Volunteering Worldwide
Location:
Americas, Asia, Africa

When planning my gap, i decided that i wanted to go with a placement company because with it being the first time i have travelled abroad alone I didn't want to hassle of red tape and also liked the idea of meeting like minded people to travel with.

After looking at many gap year placement companies I came across Changing Worlds. Although I was weary at first because they do not advertise like the larger companies and I hadn't heard of them before I looked into it and soon I realised that because they are a small company they can give each gapper a more individual, personal service which makes the whole experience that bit less scary!

With regular information updates and after going to see the people who run the company (and meet some of my travel partners!) I am very happy with the fact I chose this company over the larger ones to organise my gap placement.

India Placement

It is really wonderful to have Changing World volunteers. They are more dedicated, sincere and very helpful. I like to tell you, what the Head Teacher of Christ King Matriculation said, "that the children are doing well, their english language is good because of your volutneers the children are able to score more marks in their examinations"

The volutneers are wonderful, brilliant. they are dedicated. the children from village side do not know how to speak English, but the volunteers taught them how to talk english and general decipline, and general hygine apart from music. One boy from Orrisa saw Matt playing the keyboard and learnt from Matt how to play the musical instrument.

The children do not know how to write the Alphabets, colouring, numbers, but now the children are doing well in the school In totali can say that the Volunteers have given their Treasure, Time and Talent. (T,T,T) Matt has done a great job by updating LCC website according to English standard and he has updated all the Bios of the children which i could not have done. He has done nearly 150 children Biodatas.

Our volunteers have created a awareness about the Love Care center to everyone in UK and they wanted to do more for the LCC. we are preveledged to have such dedicated volunteers, because David and yourself and Krish who are equally dedicated towards the cause and upliftment of the poor. thank you once again for sending such volunteers and more to come. Participant Feedback - India

Chennai has all the surreal elements of classic India: vivid colour, monkeys, mangos and wandering cows. All of these things hit you as soon as you arrive, the hope of being eased gently into Indian life couldnt be possible.

What actually happens is, you are thrown into all the elements of india both surreal and paradoxical. Once you have overcome this aspect of India, the next challenge is the placement, however you need not be nervous.

The children are so friendly and even before you have time to draw breath, they have all crowded round you and are desperate for hugs. Each time I hugged a child their faces lit up, it did give me areal sense of fulfillment, and I really did want to take each and every child home. Besides the placement we did other things.

Everyone went to Mallaparaum where I encountered monkeys. One stole my bottle of water, and then drank it. A tip for everyone going out to India, Stay away from the monkeys!

I'm really wondering where the last six months have gone. When I arrived it felt like i'd never leave but now it's come to an end all too quickly and I find myself hating the idea of leaving!

The last few weeks at the Love Care Center have been amazing. We've been teaching lessons again and I'm back with first standard. We're really trying to nail the numbers one to ten but as I'm not a trained teacher and their attention span is never more than 20minutes, it is a little bit of as challenge.

We also had a great day last friday when it was one of the volunteers birthday. We scrapped lessons for the day and had a huge party with balloons and cake. We played musical statues, pass-the-parcel, apple bobbing and flour bobbing which was so so so much fun. It was crazy to find out that most of the kids had never played pass-the-parcel thinking that almost all kids in the UK have played it before they can walk! Phil, UK

Australia - outback cattle stations

My days have been pretty varied, the last few days have been good; mustering, draftting the cattle we mustered and then today we branded, castrated, de-horned, ear tagged andgave steroids to all the calves! We also managed to pick up two "potted" calves whose mothers had either been lost in the muster or who had died. These two calves are living at the house with the two baby goats, snowflake andcrunchy nut!

...If you wanted to go out to Oz and do your own thing for a while, and then join up with the changing worlds program, they will take the cost of the flights off your fee, and arrange the rest of the experience for you. That way, you just have to meet up with the other zoo volunteers and the changing worlds rep on a specified date and start from there. The possibilities are endless. If you wanted any more advice I would also recommend you give someone at changing worlds a ring to see if they are what you are looking for. They were pefect for me, but you need to be sure its right for you. Laura, UK
