Volunteer
Petčn is a 501c3 non-for-profit organization established
in San Andrčs, Petčn (with a US office in Mohnton, Pennsylvania)
whose mission is to aid development in Guatemala by training
international volunteers to participate in, design, and
implement sustainable projects.
Our
main projects focus on environmental education, general
education, reforestation, forest management, medicinal plants,
and working with the public library and public schools,
but we are open and able to aid volunteers to develop any
project that suits their abilities and goals.
Volunteers
can and are expected to take park in all program areas,
and should not limit themselves to working in one particular
area. Typical work days run from 8am-12 noon Monday through
Friday. Four caretakers and the director run programs on
a daily basis ranging from light construction, to trail
maintenance, to gardening, to teaching. Afternoons are typically
spent studying Spanish, running errands, teaching, participating
in activities, or continuing work in ecological park.
Activities
include field trips, movie night, and working in the community
library. Our program works best with volunteers who can
commit 4-12 weeks of service. Our staff is experienced with
training and working with volunteers. We can train volunteers
in numerous areas of interest including best management
practices, approaches to education, problems that affect
Guatemala, possible solutions to various problems, and most
importantly, culture.

Casa
Guatemala is an orphanage that cares for the nurturing,
health and education of over 250 children. These children
come from a variety of backgrounds; some have been abandoned,
some have been abused, while still others come from families
too poor to even provide the basics of a child's needs.
The
orphanage receives no government support and is totally
dependent upon the kind donations from people and groups
from around the world. Casa Guatemala is split into three
interdependent sites, each with its own function but working
in concert.

Our
mission is to empower the poorest, at-risk children of families
working in the community of the Guatemala City garbage dump,
by creating opportunities and fostering dignity through
the power of education.
Whether
working directly with children at our main project site
or at our early education center, both near the Guatemala
City garbage dump, or by assisting in our offices in Antigua,
you can make a significant difference in the lives of poor
children and their families by being a Safe Passage volunteer.
Volunteers
are a vital and essential part of our program. They work
in collaboration with our Guatemalan staff and other volunteers
to provide the educational and emotional support necessary
for the children in our project to break free from their
surrounding poverty through the power of education.
The
qualities and skills that our volunteers share with the
children are many: a sense of self-worth and dignity, the
motivation and perseverance to overcome a difficult challenge,
creativity, confidence, respect for others, the ability
to think critically to solve problems, and how to give generously
of one’s time, energy and talent. By
sharing these gifts, our volunteers affirm for the children
that they are capable, competent, cared for, and loved.
We are
always looking for energetic and dedicated people to be
a part of our volunteer team.
