Address: Eco Explorer Co., Ltd. 328/19 Moo 8, Tambol
Surasak, Sreracha, Chonburi 20110 Thailand.
The
centre is located at monastery grounds near a small village
which borders a secondary forest, perfect for the elephants,
however only 35 kilometres away to the west one can still
found wild herds of elephants roaming around in protect
forests and the national park.
At
the center you can find a variety of macaques (5 species),
2 species of gibbon, several species of civets, loris,
small and big cats (leopard cats, tigers), bears, crocodiles
and exotic birds. The center tries to provide these animals
with enclosures as close to nature as possible or, where
possible, reintroduction to the wild.
The
diverse range of animals being cared for at the wildlfie
retreat include: elephants,
gibbons, bears, crocodiles, monkeys, macaques, langurs,
lorises, civets, birds.
Gibbons
All
these gibbons have come through the Wildlife Rescue Center
and are now living on large natural islands, adapting to
life in the trees again. In total we can accommodate over
50 gibbons on islands, a much better option than placing
them in cages.
Objectives
Rescue
wild animals from places where they are maltreated and/or
neglected, and help them to spend the rest of their lives
in a sanctuary as close to the natural environment as possible
with the best possible care. In particular, provide sanctuary
for those animals that no-one else is prepared to care for,
e.g. the sick and disabled.
Educate
people, particularly children, to stop cruelty to animals.
In particular campaign against the illegal trade in wild
animals for the pet industry and discourage the use of animals
for entertainment, for example in performing animal shows.
Prevent
hunting and promote conservation of all natural resources,
fauna and flora alike. Educate local people, tourists and
the international community to appreciate, understand and
protect wild animals and their rainforest habitat. Cooperate
with and assist the Royal Forestry Department and other
organizations concerned with the rescue and conservation
of wild animals.
Animals
that have been abused during their lives come here and are
looked after by volunteers from all over the world. The
project is in constant need of volunteers to keep the Retreat
active all year round. This is your chance to volunteer
with the elephants that have been exploited or abused that
are being looked after at the retreat.

The
Wild Animal Rescue Foundation of Thailand is urgently
seeking for volunteers to assist a team of staff at Gibbon
Rehabilitation Project for releasing a gibbon family back
to the forest. Volunteers will assist in the research
(for instance behavioural research).
The
way the released gibbons spend their time is observed.
Behavioural elements are registered, for instance: Territorial
behaviour, urinating, threatening behaviour towards the
observers, coughing, sneezing, foraging, abnormal behaviour
and singing. Special emphasis lies on dominant behaviour,
the place of the individuals in the group, explorative
behaviour and their behaviour towards people, e.g.
The
observers. Furthermore you may participate in following
activities:
· Assist the caretakers (preparing food, feeding)
· Building and maintaining the cages.
· Daily cleaning of the cages.
· Giving talks to tourists, telling them of your experiences
and those of the animals at the project as well as enlightening
them on the current situation of the wildlife protection
in Thailand.
This
is a very good opportunity for you to get involved. It
is estimated that once we have chosen a family group,
it takes approximately one year or longer to complete
the release. With this in mind our goal is to release
at least one gibbon group every year. Khao Phra Theaw
non-hunting area can support at least 60 groups of gibbons,
so we can carry on this work for many years to come. It
also allows for the reintroduced gibbons to breed and
create a wild population.
We
are able to use only follow-up observations to evaluate
the success of the release. The study groups were watched
every day during the first month and after that several
days each month, the amount varying depending on the number
of observers available.
Observations
include general behavior, grooming behaviors, duetting,
general appearance and vigor, monitoring of range, height
reached in the canopy, distances between group members,
identification of types of natural food eaten.
